Most of the Australian universities are internationally well recognized and have high rankings. As a result, there are a lot of international students who come to Australia to study.
Despite the rise in the dollar and recent increases in education in Australia, there are still many students come to this country and are interested in studying in Australia. This is because of many special circumstances such as good social welfare, high income, good weather and beautiful beaches.
Medicine in Australia is one of the most popular fields that students usually study. All of the universities that offer medicine to students have strict rules which ensure high-quality medical degrees are awarded to students and these degrees are acceptable in many other universities and government sectors.
There are two ways to study medicine in Australia:
The 5-year direct entry to the Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine is offered at some universities which require an ATAR of 96 or higher and a high score on the ISAT test. Based on the scores, applicants will be invited to an interview. Successful applicants will then be given admission to enter the course.
In this way, applicants are required to first study a bachelor degree, such as Medical Science, and achieve a minimum score of 5.5. Also, they require doing the GAMSAT test and score at least 50. They are then eligible to apply for postgraduate medicine which is known as Doctor of Medicine. Based on the scores, a specific number of applicants will be invited for an interview. Successful applicants will then be eligible to study postgraduate medicine (MD).
The cost of studying medicine in Australia:
Although studying medicine in Australia is expensive, there are a lot of passionate students who want to study it. This is due to the high quality of the education at the Australian universities.
The average estimated cost for completion of the study in this field is from 65,000 to 70,000 Australian Dollar.
Since the Australian government or any Australian universities won’t offer scholarships to medical international students, the students require financial support from their country or their family.
List of the top Australian universities in medicine:
All Australian universities that offer medical education are approved by the Australian Medical Council (AMC), however, international students should check the list of the approved universities from their medical council in their country before applying so when they return to their country, their degree will be acceptable. In Iran, this list is provided to applicants by the Ministry of Health.
An important note: Graduate medical students are required to do a one-year internship in public hospitals. Students need to register and get the Registration Number through the State Medical board. Unfortunately, due to the increase of Australian medical graduates, since 2010 Australia will not guarantee a place for international students to do the one-year internship. In fact, a ranking system is used and the priority is given to domestic students.
