New Zealand Student Visa

To study in New Zealand, students require a student visa. The main documents for the visa application are:

  • Education degree
  • Passport
  • University Admission Letter
  • Financial documents

Assessing and issuing the visas takes place in Dubai and often in Wellington, and it takes about one to three months. For Special cases, it can take up to several months for the visa to be issued.

Work permit

International Students are allowed to work for twenty hours a week, full-time during their studies in New Zealand. Depending on the course, such as graduate student fellows and doctoral or in between semester holidays, students don’t have a limit on the amount of hours they can work.

Students have the options to work in ordinary jobs or jobs that relate to their career. Wages vary and it can sometimes cover the cost of living and in some cases all or part of the university fees.

Education in New Zealand

The level of education in New Zealand universities are divided into the following list:

  • Year 10 and 11
  • Year 12/ Foundation Year
  • Diploma

Year 10 and 11

There are a number of New Zealand universities that holds year 10 and 11 in their college. The start of the semester begins at the beginning of February; however, entry to these courses is available at any time of the year. The annual tuition fee is about NZ$18,000. Students can learn or improve their English at these colleges.

Year 12/ Foundation Year

Year 12 or foundation year takes about one to one and a half year and the tuition fee is different for each university but the average fee is about NZ$24,000 per year. After completing this course, students can go to university for their further studies.

Diploma

There are some courses that take about one year which prepare students to study associate degree. This is suitable for elderly students or students that have received their degree long time ago or students that decide to change their degree, and the annual tuition fee is about NZ$20,000.

Associate degree

Two-year associate college degree courses are considered to be a useful degree and are offered in various disciplines.  After spending a year or two to finish the course, the bachelor degree can be obtained. The tuition fee is NZ$20,000.

Bachelor degree

This degree takes from one to five years. The annual tuition fee is from NZ$25,000 but it depends on the university and the course. For example, in 2013, studying accounting at the University of Otago costs about NZ$26,000 per year but at the University of Auckland, the cost is NZ$32,000 per year (in New Zealand dollars).

Medicine is the most expensive degree in New Zealand even though entry to this field is highly competitive and hard.

Bachelor of Honors is a one-year research course which is a way to study PhD after completion of the course. The Top undergraduate students are eligible for studying this course.

Also, those people who don’t have the same level of competency in their degree can study some courses which take about one to two years to obtain their bachelor degree from New Zealand.

There are some courses that take two years which is known as Graduate Entry.  To be able to entry to the Graduate Entry, students are required to have a bachelor degree. By studying in these courses, you are able to obtain a degree in a new field, such as law.

Some undergraduate studies take three years to complete, such as computer science. The tuition fee for these courses is from NZ$26,000 annually. Some of the three-year undergraduate degrees are pre-requisite courses for other specialized degrees, such as senior design in architecture.

Some degrees take four years to complete and the annual fees are from NZ$28,000.

Some other degrees take five to six years to complete, such as medicine or double degree, i.e. marketing and law.

Graduate Certificate/ Postgraduate Diploma

Graduate Certificate, GD, and Postgraduate Diploma take six months to a year to complete, and are prerequisites courses for master degrees or changing courses and take further studies from bachelor to master or PhD. The fees for these courses are 10 to 30 percent cheaper than studying master’s degree.

Master’s degree

Studying masters in New Zealand takes one to two years and the classes can be only theory, or totally research, or a mix of both. Double master’s degree, such as Master of Engineering with Master of Business Administration is one of the popular combined courses that students usually study. The tuition fee is similar to the undergraduate degree which is NZ$25,000 per annum.

Doctoral degree (PhD)

PhD is offered by course, by research or a mix of both. Research PhD is from three to four years and students are required to hand in their research in order to complete their degree. There are some research courses that are offered to these students at the beginning of their degree so they would know how to perform a research.

PhD by course, such as surgery, psychology, and education, is a combination of some classes (specialist, laboratories, and hospitals) and research. This course also takes three to four years to complete.

Short research projects

Generally, this research project is more suitable for international students. PhD students can work in coordination with their previous university and their chosen university in New Zealand to do their short research project. This is usually called Sabbatical and students can directly contact the professor with regard to their project.

Short courses without certificate

These courses are used for different purposes: knowing the course, retraining, and training the staff members for particular companies. The Latin name for them is non-award courses which take a short amount of time to complete.
