Geographic location of Canada

The area of Canada is 10 million square kilometers and the population is 35 million people.

Canada is surrounded from the east by Atlantic Ocean, from the west by Pacific Ocean, from the north by Arctic Ocean, and neighboring United States of America from the south.

Although Canada is the second largest country in the world by total area after Russia, but its population is only about one-fifth of the Russian population. Nearly 90 percent of the Canadian population lives along the southern border.

Canada has 10 states and 3 territories. The states are Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, British Columbia, Manitoba, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Newfoundland, Labrador and Prince Edward Island. The three territories in Canada are the North West Territory, Nunavut, and Yukon.

The capital city is Ottawa which is in the province of Ontario.

The most populous cities are Toronto (in Ontario), Montreal (in Quebec) and Vancouver (in British Columbia) respectively.

Toronto’s climate is cold and Taiga forest can be seen from this city. The CN Tower in Toronto is the world’s first largest telecom tower.

Niagara Falls is located outside the city and it is the largest waterfall by width. There is an imaginary village which is also called Niagara.

The two most important industries are oil and wood cutting. Canada has the second largest oil and gas reserves in the world after Saudi Arabia.

Canada is the largest uranium and zinc producer, and many other natural resources, such as gold, nickel, aluminum and lead. It is also one of the main suppliers of agricultural products especially cereals, such as wheat.

Schools

The start of the academic year is in September and it finishes in June. Most children go to kindergarten from the age of five and they go to the first year of primary school when they are six years old. Students graduate from high school at the age of 17-18 years old when they successfully completed year twelve.

However, in Ontario, school is thirteen years and students are required to pass the Ontario Academic Courses in year thirteen.

In Quebec, students graduate from high school in year eleven and they will receive their high school diploma. Those students who want to go to university are required to do a two to three-year courses at a college.

In French, the college is called (CÉGEP) or Collèged’ enseignement général et professionnel.

The two-year courses at college will give students a pre-university certificate and the three-year course is called vocational programs which offer vocational graduate certificates and diploma.

People who spend two years studying pre-university courses at college will be able to study the four-year bachelor degree in three years.

Colleges

Colleges focus on technical and vocational training. The courses at college take one to two years to complete and conditions of entry are easier than university.

Although, some colleges also offer bachelor degree or cooperative courses (co-op) with a university until the degree is completed.

Bachelor degree

Some people prefer to begin their university studies in one of the most developed countries like Canada. Studying bachelor degree in Canada usually takes four years and getting an admission depends on the chosen university and degree. A minimum score of GPA 14 from 20 is required in high school and pre-university courses, however, in some fields, the minimum GPA is 15.

For getting a full acceptance into the course, students require at least 6.5 in the IELTS test. If the applicant received a lower score, they can get a conditional acceptance into the course, but they have to do one to two terms of English course (depending on the achieved IELTS score).

The tuition fee depends on the state, university, and the course but in general, the cost is between 15 to 19 thousand Canadian Dollar.

Some universities offer financial aids and scholarships between $2,000 to $10,000 per year to those students who have received a high GPA and an approved English certificate. After completing the first semester and receiving the exam results, students are able to apply for a scholarship.

Master’s degree

Studying in Canada is popular since Canadian universities are considered to be the most prestigious universities in the world.

Getting admission for a master’s degree depends on the applicant’s GPA and their previous university they graduated from. Students are required to get at least 6.5 in IELTS. In addition, GRE is required for applicants applying for engineering and GMAT is required for management courses.

The cost of studying master’s degree is between 16 to 17 thousand Canadian Dollar.

Scholarships: Some Canadian universities, depending on the circumstances of the applicant (high GPA, having scientific papers in international journals, participate in international seminars and conferences, having a score of 6.5 in IELTS, etc.) offer scholarships and financial support between 12 to 18 thousand Canadian Dollar per year.

Doctorate degree

Many students choose to study their doctorate degree (PhD) in Canada. This is because Canadian universities have high prestigious, offer scholarships, opportunities for getting a job and live after graduating.

The minimum admission requirements for studying PhD in Canadian universities are:

  • A four-year bachelor degree with a GPA of at least 15
  • Master’s degree with a GPA of at least 16
  • Minimum of 6.5 in IELTS test
  • Having a GRE certificate is necessary and GMAT for qualification for the field of financial management
  • Recommendation letter from three professors
  • Statement of Interest that suits the academic major

Since getting an admission for PhD is very competitive, being eligible for applying doesn’t guarantee an acceptance. Having scientific papers in international journals, participate in international conferences and seminars, and having a strong resume will raise the chances of getting admission and scholarship.

The cost of studying PhD in Canada is between 14 to 15 thousands Canadian Dollar.

The cost of living is slightly different in each states, but at least 1,000 Canadian Dollar is required for a standard living for one person.

Working while studying in Canada

Since Iranian students are full-time students, they are allowed to work for twenty hours a week while studying and full time during university holidays.

To be able to work at a university or outside of it, students require Social Insurance Number (SIN). Work permission is required to be issued in the visa in order to get SIN, otherwise, students need to go to Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) to get the permission. This service is free for all students.

Students are even allowed to work after graduation. Since student visas usually end three months after completion of the study, students are required to apply for Post-graduation work permit visa.

The duration of the course needs to be at least eight months in order to obtain a work permit after graduation. The maximum length of work permit is three years after graduation. This means that if a course takes four years to complete, then the student visa will be valid for four years and the work permit visa will be valid for three years.

Studying Medicine

To enter the field of medicine, pharmacy and dentistry, a bachelor degree in a related field, such as, Science or Psychology is required. Students also required to seat the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) and pass this test. A GPA of over 16 in bachelor degree and a strong resume which includes participating in voluntary activities and getting a referral from the previous professor are important factors for admission to medical school.

After four years of studying and one year of Internship, students will graduate as doctors.

Studying Law

Students must study a bachelor degree, such as Art or Science to be eligible to enter law school. The Law School Admission Test (LSAT), which is held three to four times a year, is compulsory for all students who want to enter law school.

After entering law school and studying four years, students will receive a bachelor degree in law. The graduate will need to work in a law institute for one year under the supervision of a lawyer. At this stage, they require to choose a specific field and after the completion of this one-year period, they need to do Bar Examination. After passing this exam, the graduate will become a member of the Bar Association and can work as a lawyer.
